LinkedIn: A Way to Market Yourself

By Lindsey Murphy

As a college student that needs connections in the business world, I created a LinkedIn page a few weeks ago. The professional social media site is where you can boast about all of your professional accomplishments and send a connection to anyone you have a professional connection with. According to mashable.com, LinkedIn,”has grown to 225 million members in over 200 countries, making it the world’s largest professional network on the internet.” Here are a few things to know if you’re thinking about starting your very own LinkedIn page.

First thing’s first is the ever crucial profile. Your LInkedIn profile is like a resume on social media because it showcases your job experience and personal skills to potential employers. The goal of your profile is to make it as complete as it can be, according to the site’s 0-100% rating it gives you. Ways to make your profile more personable are adding a recent profile photo and a professional summary about yourself. Other things to include on your page to make it more informative about yourself include current position with description, education, volunteer experience, at least five skills, and work samples.

LinkedIn makes finding people you know to connect with very easy. After updating my education and work experience, I would find people I know under a “Suggestions” tab. Also you can “Import Contacts” and allow access to any email address you’ve been in contact with. After you’ve made several connections you can find even more people by heading to a “People You May Know” page. When you connect with someone, you can also send a personalized message along with it, which is a useful tool when reach out to potential employers.
